Cipele za planinarenje i kišu moraju biti napravljene od vrlo čvrstog, kvalitetnog i nepropusnog materijala kako bi zaštitile stopala od vode, kiše, snijega, blata ili vlage te pružile zaštitu od ozljeda kod penjanja po težem terenu. Također moraju biti dovoljno tople kako stopala ne bi promrznula na nižim temperaturama. Najčešće su zato dobro izolirane i podstavljene nekim debljim toplim materijalom poput vune. Ako čizme za planinarenje koje planirate kupiti nemaju dobru podstavu, svakako uz njih kupite i dobre termo čarape koje će održati vaše noge toplima. Nepromočive cipele najčešće su više od gležnja. Na taj način voda ili snijeg teže mogu prodrijeti u cipelu, a vodonepropusan materijal čuva sve ostalo. Cipele mogu biti impregnirane kako bi spriječile prodor vlage, a postoje i zasebni sprejevi za impregnaciju koje možete iskoristiti na svojim kožnim čizmama. Ipak, takve čizme ne preporučuju se za aktivnosti poput planinarenja i odlazaka u prirodu tijekom hladnijih ili mokrih mjeseci, kao ni za boravak na kiši. Kao i kod svakih drugih, kod cipela za planinarenje i kišu bitno je pripaziti na kvalitetu materijala i izrade. Cipele dobre kvalitete dobro će pristajati uz nogu i učvrstiti gležanj za lakše hodanje i penjanje. Dobar materijal neće se lako oštetiti, pucati niti odvajati. Druga stvar na koju se treba paziti je veličina cipela. Dobro je izabrati cipele barem pola broja veće jer ćete ih najvjerojatnije nositi uz deblje čarape. Inače nikako nije dobro da su cipele prevelike jer će stvarati probleme pri hodanju, a ako su preuske ili premale uzrokovat će bol i žuljeve.
